AFR Article | Industry, finance unearth cost of embodied carbon

In a sponsored article by NAB in the Australian Financial Review, Kapitol Group's Director's Andrew Deveson and David Caputo added their expertise to a discussion about how embodied carbon and sustainability is coming to the forefront of the construction industry.

Andrew and David say that, while they are at the coalface of change in this area, they go completely unrewarded under the existing carbon regime. The pair says their clients do not currently have an obligation to reduce embodied carbon and called for initiatives like green concrete to be encouraged with government incentives.

"The amount of carbon the construction industry uses is huge - but there is no actual encouragement to influence any decision to reduce the carbon that you're producing," says Deveson. "Our biggest single impact has been the substitution of traditional blend concrete for low carbon concrete." "We've been doing that across most of our portfolio jobs - from data centres, to apartment buildings, student accommodation, you name it."

The pair says collaboration with stakeholders, including suppliers and contractors, to encourage the use of sustainable materials and practices is crucial.
