Kapitol has been privileged to undertake a number of projects where heritage preservation took centre stage. With a growing emphasis on heritage elements in our pipeline of work, we’re proud of the role our teams and consultants are playing in preserving historical integrity while navigating intricate engineering challenges.
Innovation and Strategy
Restoration heritage often entails reconstructing heritage components to their original positions, a task that needs meticulous planning and collaboration. Kapitol's method involves using advanced techniques like point cloud surveys to check existing conditions accurately. This method has been a game-changer on one of our current projects where we're restoring two heritage chimneys. The surveys have matched our 3D models, confirming the existing conditions. We will also be able to validate the accuracy of our reconstruction of the chimneys upon completion.
Collaboration
The age and historical significance of heritage structures pose unique engineering challenges. Whether it's the careful reconstruction of chimneys or the preservation of 130-year-old pub, Kapitol handles the complexities with skill. Structural investigations and design considerations are paramount to ensuring the seamless integration of heritage features into modern redevelopment projects.
"Unknowns" sometimes pop up unexpectedly, like on our CMSA project. As the restoration progressed we encountered various surprises, leading to significant design changes. Kapitol managed these changes in consultation with heritage experts, ensuring the project stayed on course while preserving the integrity of the design. For example, when we excavated the floor and roof of the heritage house and created openings in the brickwork, it became evident that a revaluation of the old structure's design was necessary.
To satisfy all stakeholders needs, a cross-collaboration with our in-house team and stakeholders is carried out to ensure that all parties are satisfied without comprising the project’s integrity. Our design team closely collaborates with stakeholders to pick the right construction methods, managing any concerns around refurbishing heritage sites.
Balancing the preservation of the past with the needs of the present requires a deep understanding of both the heritage and modern construction practices. By embracing innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence, Kapitol continues to lead the way in ensuring that our heritage sites thrive for generations to come
